DMA stands for Direct Memory Access and it optimizes how information flows between devices inside your computer. Without DMA your cpu is kept busy for doing mediocre tasks such as moving blocks of data instead of doing useful things (like updating your display or playing your mp3s), and this results in poor responsivness from your computer. With DMA mode your CPU just has to be notified of the biggining and end of a tranfer, freeing the CPU to doing other things.
