People are sometimes very passionate about a belief or a credo etc. Is this because they believe they are righteous or are they fearful of being wrong?

it usually means they think they are right and want to let others in on the truth. When people find truth (and most of us are searching for it in our own way) we don't want to violate that truth so we may appear to be a little righteous when in fact we are protecting ourselves from untruth. As to the fearful of being wrong, it is more the fear of being taken over by the known wrong. In other words, in putting up a vigorous defense, they are more protecting themselves from you than projecting them selves onto you. Hope this helped.
