L'OREAL Paris superior Preference. You said your hair was long and there was not enough. My g/f uses 2 boxes her hair is long and thick and it works great for her.

I'll have to see if I can find that. Usually the dye leaves tghe grey roots much lighter than the rest of my hair!

I have tried almost all the "box" hair dyes and found that loreal preference works best....not the cream one, that does not cover gray. My hairdresser told me to go to Sally's and buy the processor and color separate and mix two colors. My hair is auburn....medium to light....so red dye does not stick to gray hair...mine would wash out in two weeks....so I mix one full tube of light golden brown (loreal excellence for 100%gray coverage in blue box at sallys) and mix it with a half tube of red or auburn. My hair is long so I need one and a half for coverage. If your hair is short or medium length mix the tubes half and half....its one tube with 2.5 oz's of developer...or I use one and a half tubes with 3.75 oz's of developer....I leave it on for the full 40 mins. also that makes a difference with gray coverage. I dye my roots to about 4 inches out and leave on for 20 mins then pull the rest of the color to the ends for the last 20 mins.....I am 42 and have to cover my stubborn grays every 5 weeks...sallys is the way to go....good luck my silver strand friends....

Thank you - I will definitely try this. I have long hair too and the boxes never have enough to cover! I never thought of going to Sally's!

Which one? There are so many different types!
Avatar Epistaxis Mar, 08 2008 at 03:27 PM
Clairol grey busters, you can get it from any sally's beauty supply store. Make sure you find your natural level hair color, mix with equal parts of 20 volume peroxide.

Color Charm Demi-Permanent colors available at Sally's. Still, they build up on the ends like other colors. The good news is that demi-permanent colors don't damage the hair or burn the scalp (unless you are allergic) like permanent color. The Color Charm gives a very rich result and lasts a long time.

A demi that covers grey? I thought the only option was permanent. I'll have to give it a try - my grey is more white and it's very prevalent.

Just make sure you leave it on long enough. Good luck.

I've been using Loreal Excellence for about 5 years. I used a dark blond. I made the mistake of using a clairol touch up kit for dark blonde and it made my hair darker.
I have 100% grey and my roots grow out really fast. I try to go as light as I can so my roots aren't as prominent.
I really liked the fact that every time I did color my hair...about every 2 weeks!!!you really couldn't see a line....it seemed like the color was really even. Now I would like to make my hair lighter and I'm not sure if I can just go from 7 to 8 and achieve a lighter color or if I have to get low lights from a salon.
