  • hmm well, we are already being told what is best to eat, drink, wear etc and they say that every day you are seen on cctv 20 (?) times a day.... i'd say thats already started. we just have to make sure we are not told not to write and our language isn't dumbed down into newspeak :-)
  • Yes I've both read the book and have lived under a totalitarian regime before, so I recognise what's happening in America. And yes, it has started, in fact more than started. Big Brother is alive and well in the US and thriving on an eternal state of war and the fear of the majority of it's inhabitants.
  • Yes, I have read the book...its a favorite of mine. And yes, i think it has already started.
  • it has already started it's called technology.
  • I know this. Big Brother is watching you.... And he thinks those glasses are sexy as hell. LOL!
  • We in the UK have more cameras than any other country on the damn planet - it is unbelievable. We are filmed more than anybody else, anywhere.
  • I haven't read it, but I believe it has already started. But, it's not a government thing, it's a corporate thing. Which is much worse, because the corporations have no accountability whatsoever.
  • Excellent book, no doubt. I'd like preface my comment by saying that I am very, very critical of the Bush administration. That said, I'll come out and say that: no, I don't think Big Brother has already started, nor do I see Americans living in some Orwellian regime in the near future. We have, very regretfully, lost some of our civil liberties - however I see these returning in the near future, although it by no means makes it right. I'll even go as far as to say that in the past we've been closer to an Authoritarian regime than we are present day, namely during the Cold War era. The fact that we can still easily read Orwell, and even have this very discussion, is testament to this notion. It is important to note, however, that while I do not agree that we are on our way to an Orwellian future that is not synonymous with legitimizing the curtailing of civil liberties by means of the Patriot Act et al.
  • The FBI can listen in on you using your cell phone even when it's turned off. How Big Brother is that?
  • Yes, I've read the book--it's a quick and fantastic read. BB is out there, but I don't think it could become as widespread as he fictionalizes; if it did I suppose there would be massive revolts throughout the country--who knows. All I know is I wouldn't want to be in that type of totalitarian society.
  • Sadly it started in the rest of the world too, not only in the US. But i doubt it will ever take on forms like in the book. I at least will never hate for one mandatory hour a day.
  • Yes, I read the book and I believe that Big Brother is alive and well. Also, watching the movie "Enemy of the State" convinced me even more.
  • I think particularly in America, there would be a revolution before it got that far... but it's definitely plausible to some extent. Fiction like that is generally a bit overstated and oversimplified in terms of the reality... but is only such good fiction because it's based in reality.
  • No. I keep meaning to read it too! and then I forget for a long time or get tied up with some other book. I hear it's terrific though.
  • yes, I was gripped by the book, but to be honest, can't remember the storyline. Its years since I read it. Read it in High school.
  • I read the book. I think it's a pretty good picture of what can happen when we close our minds to creativity and let others tell us what is good and bad.
  • I read the book about 35 years ago and I watched the movie the year it was released. I'm surprised we are not living in that type of society yet. It can happen soon.
  • Yes, but so long ago that I really can't answer your second question. It made you think... it really made you think... and it makes you paranoid... VERY paranoid.
  • I was upset to find out this question was asked already, I asked it last night, but I see it was you, so Im fine with that. Nice to know Im in good commpany!
