Not too sure tbh, but I used it when I was at school (in the UK ofc) to mean Physical Education (ie. sports) and that was back in 1990.
Also I am pretty sure my mother used it too, back in the the 60's although I dont think my dad used it (this is only seeing as my mum knew what I meant when I said PE and my dad did not) back in ca. 1950.
