  • Heres information from a real scientist: Answer 1: It will float (being lighter than air) until the pressure inside is so much greater than the pressure outside that the rubber that the balloon is made of can't handle the strain anymore. That will depend on how strong the rubber is that the balloon is made of. Weak balloons will pop lower down, while strong balloons can rise very very high indeed (like weather balloons). So it's kind of hard to answer the question. Maybe one could make a reasonable set of assumptions and calculate when it would happen for a toy balloon, but I'm not sure how.   • I have a very interesting story to tell related to this. I live in Portland Oregon, and my brother and I released a balloon with our address and names on it. We received a letter a few months later with our balloon all the way from Montana- 300 miles away! It traveled over the rocky mountains, which have peaks of 14,000 feet. Judging by this, it could reach over 14,000 feet.
  • Not only will the balloon eventually pop, and fall back to the earth, but if it falls into the ocean, a sea critter like a turtle will think it's a jelly fish, try to eat it, and probably choke to death in the process... so careful with those helium balloons near the sea.

  • Well that would depend on how much lift is applied to it and how warm the gas is. the problem everyone is missing is that gasses turn into liquid when they become cold, its a reason rockets use liquid fuel instead of gas propellants as the higher up you go the colder it gets (also a reason rain/snow happens due to increases in air pressure and extreeme drops in temperature). Hot air balloons can go much higher than a standard helium balloon.
