  • When i used to work third shift when in college the reasons were two-fold. one those hours well obviously worked around my school schedule and two my employer paid more to work third shift. I mean i am doing the same job as the other shifts, but getting paid 2 bucks an hour more, cant beat that
  • I work swing shift, 6p-4a. Is that third shift? I thought it was second shift. Anyway, I work my hours because I get better days off. If I worked day shift, I would be stuck there weekends, but because I came to swing, I get Thursday, Friday and Saturday off :) Plus, I like the swing crew better than the day crew :)
  • I work 3rd shift! 10:30 P.M. to 6:30 A.M. I work it because I had a first shift job 8-5 before this one, and it was impossible to do anything! Something as simple as going to the dentist required a day off of work! This way, working 3rd, any appointments are made with ease, and I still get my required 8 hours of sleep!
  • I'm a night owl and I'm actively seeking employment that will have an opening for 3rd shift. For some reason my internal clock has me most active until 6am and then I'm dead to the world until 3pm :-/
  • i work 3rd every now and then, and it really messes up my schedule. i think if i had to work it constantly i would probably go a bit crazy. i really dislike working overnight.
  • I have worked 3rd shift for 5 years now and I would never work days as long as I didn’t have to. I work the 3rd shift because there are less people to deal with, you get more work done, and they pay you more to work that shift. I worked day shift for several years before that and I was always being pulled 100 different ways to get my work done and help the clients out. Plus like Eric2020 said I don’t have to take time off to do things during the day I can basically set up appointments/dates whenever I want. Also, if I need extra money I can pick up a day time job and no have to worry about the two interfering with each other.
  • It is calmer, less hectic... fewer call bells (when I am working as an aide), less staff underfoot and telling me what to do, less noise, less calls to the units for STAT sticks, etc. I can organize my work better without the interruptions of so many doctors writing orders. There are fewer admissions at night. I do not have to deal with meals or AM/HS ADLs (when I work as an aide). I also deal with those hours better on my "clock." Normally my body clock prefers swing shift but I prefer the work on nights so much that I have worked nights almost solidly since 1982. I do have to deal with cranky patients who do not like me waking them up at oh God-hundred in the d*mned AM to draw their BLOOD... can't that wait until MORNING? ((no, your doctor ordered your blood draw for 12/3/5/etc. am, please speak with your doctor and ask it to be changed to a better time for you or have your night shift draw canceled. That way I shall not wake you tomorrow at this time.)) I try to arrange my visits around normal nursing visits when possible so we both wake the patient at the same time, resulting in a less cranky patient.
