  • They did seem to have some natural resistance. We can see that through the length Gollum survived (his race were related to hobbits) and the length of time Bilbo held on. But they had largely been overlooked by the great races, so, you are correct, there never was a ring of power made for them.
  • Hobbits are a type of halfling ... they are part human, part elf, and part dwarf ... they have a very high resistance to magic, which is why their race has no wizzards. In a fashion similar to the way the bad guys crossed orcs and goblins, the good guys spent centuries encouraging friendly relations, truces, partnerships, and even the intermarrying of humans, elves, and dwarves and accidentally stumbled on a magic resistant cross breed that became a stable race of its own.
  • I'm a fan, but my obsession has long since faded. I always thought that the books tried to portray the race in a manner of being "good people". Maybe they were just generally good people.
  • I always thought it was because they were innocents, and being so small and humble had pure spirits. Those of power (Men, dwarves, elves) were easily succumbed. Perhaps this is why it took Frodo a while to fall to its power. Toward the end he was taken over, the weight bearing more and more, while Sam was able to yield the ring quite easily, being free of corruption.
