I just received a ticket in NYC for driving while talking on my cell phone. The officer marked my gender as being male instead of being female. Is this grounds for fighting the ticket?

Maybe he could not tell the difference.

Actually, this makes no difference at all. your drivers license number has all the correct information and this error can be corrected in traffic court.

    Your citation is still valid.

No. this is one of the reasons for a court date. whatever minor mistakes were made, at the time of the citation, can be corrected in court. i once issued a citation to a person from guatamala. he appeared to be hispanic and did not have any identification to prove otherwise. this minor error was corrected in court and the traffic violation was still valid. once he understood, he plead guilty.

It's worth fighting every ticket. Often the officer involved can't be bothered to show up to defend his charges, and the ticket is removed from your record. You should check with your insurance, but I guess this would affect your insurance because it's a moving violation.
