You can, but most programs do not accommodate younger kids. I went to Italy in 8th grade for four months; however, my entire family was going. If you are able to find a family that would be willing to host you then go, now and never look back. An exchange program will certainly change your life. The great thing about middle school exchanges are that your school will probably be more accommodating because the issue of credits will not come up until high school. But if you can not find a host family, there are definitely many good programs for high school students, gap years, and college.

I think I forgot to mention that there are summer exchange programs too and many of them accept middle school kids. Look around...google it!
