  • Well, it depends on what branch of Christianity you are. Most likely, you just won't be able to persuade your family, no matter what convincing points you bring up. I would just like to point out that a lot of anime will have more Japanese-oriented religious aspects. Death Note and Bleach are examples, since Christians would not believe in death gods. Of course, you can always tell your parents that it's just like watching any other show where it's only a story. Anime can have some positive morals too, and some may not be from a biblical perspective, but the shows aren't immoral, or even amoral. They just might have a different view. Explain to your parents that it is also beneficial to be cultured and see what is outside of the country, and how other countries view the world.

When Jesus traveled around to towns, the most likely place he would be found...near theaters and areas of dramatic readings. This was because there were always a lot of people around those areas, and he would be able to deliver his message to a lot of people. Considering our advancement in technology, I doubt Jesus would skip over anime because "these people are going to Hell and there's no way to save them." ...if you see where I'm going with that...

  • well.... in my humble opinion, the greatest reason that animes are so appealing is that the japanese story writers don't bound themselves to any religious, social or geographical limitations, they simply CREATE..... and oh my, they end up doing a pretty good job by doing so..... and this is EXACTLY why your parents might be feeling the way that they do...... first of all, as you might have seen in a number of animes, there's a concept of shinigamis (death-gods), demi-gods, evil gods, good gods, this-god, that-god, humans attempting to gain the powers of god etc..... this is something which religious parents fear will taint the concepts of religion / God passed on by them to their children. To be fair to them, i don't blame them. I remember my days of adolescence, everything barred by my parents held me with more interest, furthermore, things that i saw / heard effected my thought pattern etc. So, given this, i think it's a protective reflex action on the part of the parents to save their children from anything they deem harmful for their children, may it be physical or mental. Going on further on the topic, in Japanese media, there's no as such concept of unsuitable materials for a given age, thereby, the animes may at times contain themes violent & sexual in nature, something which does effects a nurturing mind..... this is my viewpoint on the topic, i will NOT declare animes as a work of devil OR it being in lines with the holy scripture, i have laid down the points, now you should decide on your own what's BEST for you

I am Christian, I love anime, I love the fantasy worlds that are created from the minds of others. they inspire me to be more creative in my own life. That aside though, they are great entertainment, often involving much richer plot lines and more interesting characters then any live action feature. The artwork involved in producing anime is also somethign to be respected. Does your family believe that art in general is offensive to God? No one can help you with your family I'm affraid but hopefully they can understand that their opinions are unfounded and alarmist.

" Honestly, many animes do have themes that are not Christian, like people possessed by demons/spirits, not to mention that often the female characters are scantly clad, and at least one or two male characters (most often the one who is or pretends to be a religious figure) is a womanizing scum bag, those sorts of thing. But, I think it's mostly overreacting/ overly sensitive parents.
  • I'm sure there are plenty of anime movies that are more religion friendly. For example, Wings of Honneamise- that has a girl in it who is trying to preach religion to people who are caught up in a time of war. Porco Rosso- the hero is transformed into a pig- by god- and sent back to earth as punishment for not dieing in battle with his comrades, but when he fights to save a girl's freedom he has his humanity restored. Maybe you're not too fond of these movies, but you could try introducing your parents to different kinds of anime and point out that not all anime is horrific and violent. It might also make them understand that just because something doesn't follow the bible exactly, it isn't neccessarily bad. A lot of great movies do use really intense imagery to put across a positive or thoughtful message. And anime is a very successful example of that.

  • As a Christian and a mum, I can understand why they might be concerned. 1)the concept of fighting and agression in anime is a worry 2) many of the anime are quasi messianic figures 3) there is a lot of buddhist theology taught in anime (my kids used to watch it, so I know) 4) you can spend a lot of time watching it when you could be doing something more worthwhile and glorifying to God. I am not saying watch or not watch. I am saying: be discerning. Get a pen and paper and note down the things that could be dangerous to a Christian way of thinking (revenge, vendetta, the misuse of animals, hatred, the role of women, theology from Buddhism, Shintoism etc). You might find that mum and dad have some genuine concerns. I would also advise you to limit how much you watch and keep your mind's ears open to attitudes that could influence the way you think. As Paul says in Philippians 4: 8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
  • Those concerns you have listed apply not to anime but to entertain as a whole. Anime is entertainment, full stop. In more cases then not it also comes with a plot or morale that most live action tv shows and movies these days simply lack. I would be far more concerned about what you watch on tv in general then any random anime. For the record, Buddism is not contradictory to Christian beliefs. Shinto, does have some concepts that seem to challenge Christianity but then the kami have their reflection in the form of the angels of God and the fallen angels of the devil. You can't point at one thing and say "oh that in general is bad" that's bias, it's stereotyping, it's not loving your neighbour in the sense that should you do the same thing to a racial group you'd be a racist. Only in this case it's okay because it's not a person you are talking about. It is however the same fundamental mistake that leads to the destruction of others. That is most certainly not what the bible teaches us. This said, there are anime series out there that are not suitable for a strictly Christian audience, or many other kinds of audiences either. As in all things, judge fairly that which you can see and be fair for that which you can not see until such a time as you are qualified to make a judgement.

  • Sunblynd 5.0 couldn't have said it better. Parents fear things that they don't understand, people with closed minds also do this. 1 + 1 = 2 and religion tends to take things to the Extreme. It also gives people the "excuse" to not try to understand things from more that one viewpoint. You only have one life, your choices are your own and you are the person you ultimately have to answer to because you have to live with yourself.

  • My family is quite similar too. Anime is a portal to Japan and to their culture, and it usually includes some underlying mythology as well, which is educational. One argument is this: Every anime has a story to tell, and people watch anime to see how the plot develops and what happens to the characters they have come to care about. Role playing games are very similar too, as rpgs are a lot like books, but better, as books aren't interactive. Also, reading a book again won't be as fun as playing a game again that was intended to be played a few times.

  • Anime is as diverse a media style as live-action media. The main difference is the geographical origin of the media. Anime is based in Japan, a society much less influenced by Christian overtones. America, on the other hand, is much different. More media in America would be more suitable for a Christian viewer, assuming they have an outlook where they should only take in things condusive to their own faith, as opposed to taking in all things God has created/allowed Man to create, irrespective of their faith. It still is a personal decision, and your family doesn't call the shots in your life once you get out of the house. Make your own decisions if/when that day comes around.   • I'm sure that the Bible never addresses anime specifically, however, i'm sure that if you're watching shows with lots of blood, killing, and swearing... eg. Bleach, then you might want to rethink something like One Piece. You should talk to your parents but be very respectful when you do because it does say in the bible that you are to honor and respect your parents... so talk to them, show them a reasonable anime and then maybe they'd be willing to rethink their answer. but the biggest thing to remember is respect because, not only does it say to do so in the Bible, but it will show them how mature you are and get you a lot closer to swaying them over.

  • Anything that is against the morals of the bible seem to be condemned. In this day and age, more people are drifting away from the beliefs of the bible. There are so many things that religious people are missing out on. Instead of criticizing something of other's beliefs it would be wise to learn from other people's perspectives and beliefs. Not one person will believe in the same thing. Anime is a whole new world. It is an enjoyable experience and it's easy to escape reality while watching it.   • Anime was created by the Japanese as a desperate attempt to Americanize their own culture and influence their people. Its a glamorization of American styles, people-figures, cultures, ideas, drama, etc... integrated into a Japanese based story line. Japanese trying to be Americans. Americans watch it because they think it makes them culturally diverse. They think they are getting a taste of authentic Japanese culture. Its an obsession that draws them in somehow, an addiction. They watch it to become more Japanese. Its a ridiculous cycle of two societies slowly becoming homogeneous. Both sides thinking they're getting a taste of the other. Americans are only getting a taste of the American culture, skewed through the eyes of the Japanese. Perhaps that is why they like it though? My roommate is an anime junkie, and does absolutely nothing with his life. He is also a moron that thinks he is a geek. A geek perhaps, but one without a shred of real intellect. He cant and doesnt hold down a job, sleeps all day, watches anime whenever he is awake. Its a pathetic existence... his life would have more meaning if I burned him in my fireplace for heat during the winter.

Absolutely everything in the old testament is just stolen from other faiths that were popular at the time, and the christian church decided that they wanted money, and wealth, and power. The idea of Jesus for instance was stolen from mithraism. Even the image of God being an old man with the flowing beard is taken from the image of Zeus from greek mythology. So...yeah.   • ... No EPIC offense... but what do they know about God? I consider myself a Christian, but I still yell at some people about this. YOU didn't create the whole damn universe, so how the hell do YOU know what God wants you to do? Did you get some kinda revelation? Well, yeah, stuff like hentai is bad, but seriously? I doubt that you watch that kinda stuff... But seriously. Your family members are not the messenger of God, telling that He wouldn't like that stuff. Anime is cool. Anime isn't bad. Like I said, hentai is, but not all anime. Seriously... the nerve of some people, acting as if they're God himself...
  • The anime Naruto for example, is basically self-defense. ROFL!!!!! Seriously though, my Aunt is Jehovah's Witness and she sees nothing wrong with the show. Naruto is not a "evil" show. If anything, it teaches people that they can overcome their obsticules and do anything in their heart that they want to do. The fighting is self-defense, just like in everyday life. People are christian, and they have a right to defend themselves. I mean God gave us common sense in that matter. If someone is attacking you, aren't you going to fight back. Uh, yeah. Anyway, you get my point.
  • Everyone has thier own opinion of what God wants you to do. Thats why we have so many different christian religions. There are alot of different types of anime. some good, some bad. The ones I really enjoy and share with my family are ones created by 'Studio Ghibli'. He (Miyazaki)is an incredible family centered animator/writer. Some of his works include "Spirited away, Kiki's delivery service, Howls Moving castle, and princess mononoke. Some Disney movies are considered Anime since they worked in conjunction with Major japanese writers/animators. If your Family thinks that Disney animated movies are bad, then im afraid they are extremely closed minded and you should make your own descions regarding what you feel is good anime and what is bad. I hope this helps in some way.

  • Anime, is anime, besides it couldn't be stated in the Bible because anime was developed way after the Bible was printed. So your parents are wrong, anime is entertainment and is a great hobby too.

  • Look Im not going to battle religion. You have to decide what you want to do. You have to know one thing. Your family only says that out of love and concern. I don't belong to your faith. But trust me we all think the same way. State your mind and in time they will accept it. (Granted with a major chip on the shoulder) They will get over it.

  • Well, pokemon is clearly satanic. I mean, it teaches evolution to young children! You use mystic items which are clearly from pagan sources, ie. fire stone, moon stone. Plus, the story is quite obviously taken from satanic religions, and definitely not based on catching bugs. God damn...I wouldn't mind if they just said 'It's too violent' or something, that's fair enough, but against the bible? Sweet jesus...

  • watching anime is no different - from a religious standpoint- than watching an action movie. My grandma is 60 years old, very religious and she loves anime. full metal alchemist is her favorite. so it sounds to me like your family is being ignorantly judgemental. and that was not meant to be insulting, i would have said the same about any of my own family who had an opinion like that without first watching a good variety of anime first.
  • They must be thinking of hentai. When I was in high school they would block all anime sites under the pretense that it was the pornographic kind. If you can, convince your parents to watch it with you. Maybe they will see it is no better or worse than many other cartoons on TV.

  • I'm a Christian too and I love anime. There's nothing in the Bible where I feel it points out you shouldn't watch anime. But I do believe that there are certain animes that could become a hindrance to you in your walk with God (certain kinds of violence or explicit adult situations) that you should avoid. 1 Cor. 10:31 is a good principle for every situation - "Whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for the glory of God." But I also think you should consider where your family is coming from. They might be concerned about certain kinds of anime - and they rightly should be. But most anime is okay in my opinion, you need to use discretion.
  • When I went to a christian school, the teachers said that Pokemon characters were really demons ,simply because they LOOKED that way. If they don't watch it, then how can they know exactly what it is? Anime is short for animation. In this case, we are talking about Japanese Animation. It's so diverse, I would not be surprised if someone created a christian show using animation.

  • i'm christian and my fammily has no prob with it. HOW IS IT BAD!!! it is so great when i'm bored. It is the best thing EVA. I couldn't live with out it. ^_^
