  • The only real competitor to Google in terms of advertising is the Overture search engine, which provides out-sourced Search facilities to many content portals, the popular "home pages" (think Excite, Yahoo! as examples of this type of home page)... The main difference with Overture is that it also offers pay-per-performance advertising in the form of higher ranking in search results, as well as results-related text advertising to the side and above results. However, I think Overture goes overboard on the advertising, plus I have a little stigma towards them anyway as they provide search facilities for MSN, Yahoo! and CNN - and I don't really like those sites either. Google has stayed the truest to its mantra of efficient and clean search results, I'll put up with their text ads so long as they provide them in an unbiased way... If they were to offer biased search results in exchange for payment then I think I'd go off Google very quickly. But yes, Overture offers services similar to Google's - and a few more side from that. But I still think Google's advertising is more effective.
