  • It's good in that you don't have to be stuck behind idiot drivers yakking on their cellphones on a 2-lane country road. Bad in that if you do get into an accident at 100+ miles per hour you'll most likely die or survive with some horrible disability. At least at high speed you can hopefully get the hell out of danger as quickly as it comes towards you.
  • Actually, a lot of the Autobahn has a speed limit. (sorry to burst your bubble) This is a very subjective question. I personally am of the opinion that speed does not automagically equate to danger unlike what seems to be the majority of Americans these days. It is important to know how to drive, constantly monitor and adjust for all the conditions, and drive accordingly. I have driven in Germany a couple times (including on the Autobahn) and find it to be a "good idea"... More facts I've found: (just from personal experience) Their death rates are lower than on American freeways Their accident rates are lower than on American freeways Their vehicles are generally newer, better technologically, tougher and in better condition (they all have to pass regular checkups) Cost of ownership of a vehicle is higher Their driving is better (it is harder and more expensive to get a license over there) The roads are not necessarily better than in the US The traffic can be as heavy or heavier than in the US. I personally feel that drivers are generally more courteous and alert on the Autobahn than in the US EVERYBODY knows that the left lane is the passing lane and NOT the "cruising" lane... Trucks are not allowed in other lanes than the right one in many areas. Generally, if they are driving a vehicle that can handle it (mercedes/audi/bmw/even some VWs), on straight stretches of road with little traffic, they will travel at speeds between 190-240KPH (118-149MPH) and the rest of the traffic travels around 160-190KPH (99-118MPH). Only trucks and the few lower end vehicles that can pass the technical tests will travel at speeds between 80-150KPH (trucks have stickers on their bumpers indicating what speed they can travel at depending on whether they are fully loaded or not and the weather conditions) Cruise control is pretty useless if you are one of the fast movers as you are constantly adjusting your speed for the conditions. Fuel is more expensive (by factors of 3 or more) P.S. I feel safer on the German roads than the French roads and I'm French hehe. Driving in the US scares the crap out of me. I think it has something to do with the mixture of bad drivers and everybody having different driving styles. In Europe there is more a tendency for everybody to drive agressively yet courteously. (I know that sounds contradictory)
  • Its said about 1/3 has a speed limit of about 120-130 kmph (roughly 75-82 mph). But studies have shown accidnet rates are much lower on the Autobahn than on Interstates.
  • I love the idea and they have very strict laws for lane changes. The fines are strict if you go to slow in the fast lane and you need to yield a lot of room for any and all lane changes. Tail gaiting is strictly enforced and the length between cars needs to be wider. I love the idea.
  • In Germany, it's a good idea.
