In the political arena, what we get is duplicitous, dishonorable, dishonest and untrustworthy. What we need is honorable, of good character, honest and trustworthy. Why do we never get what we need?

Because you cannot win against the dishonorable by being honorable... Someone must stoop down.

I tend to agree with Samuel Johnson on this - politics is the last resort of a scoundrel. Politics certainly appears to attract a lot of particularly self-serving people.

I should say I disagree.Not everybody are bad.I DO KNOW people who belong to your latter description in your question.They are of course famous but the sadder part is that, in most cases I've seen, they are able to influence only a small part(a district or to the maximum a state) by their honest politic ethics.Those in the top level belong to the first category always.
