When cooking in silicone bake ware, do chemicals from the plastic get into the food?

'They' say not, at least not anymore than leaches out of non-stick pans and such. But one thing I noticed about them is that things don't brown and crisp like in "real" metal pans. And they don't taste the same. I don't think it's the silicone but I don't know. I've given up on them. They sounded terrific but not worth the hassle. They are hard to clean, too.
