  • This is dependant upon the accuracy of your measuring instrument. If the instrument has an error of + or - .5", then a leaf fractionally longer than 3.5 will read 3.5, and one fractionally shorter than 3.5 will also register 3.5. It's the problem of taking an analogue or indiscrete amount (length, weight, time, etc.) and making it discrete, losing accuracy in the process. Hence, when taking readings, you cannot ignore error values.
