I've fired both. The Glock holds more cartridges and the one I fired was extremely accurate. But the grip was very large and a bit uncomfortable. The 1911 holds fewer cartridges but fits my hand much better. If I were going to be using the gun for serious self-defense I'd probably prefer the greater capacity but if I were going to be casually shooting and having fun, I'd use the 1911. Incidentally, the glock, loaded, weighs less than the 1911 empty.

I prefer a 1911, although they serve different purposes. The 1911 was designed as a battle pistol, cocked and locked. The Glock was designed as an all around pistol, law enforcement, home defense, and carry.
