Chewing a bubble-gum while cutting an onion prevents tearing... Whats the reason behind it?

I didn't know this trick but if it works it's probably because the gum fills the scent receptors which usually trigger the tears.

Sorry, I don't know about that one, but I sure know that placing an onion in a bowl of cold water before or during cutting does prevent tearing.
