I hope you made out the proper police reports and notified the credit card companie(s), if the theft involved your credit cards. if not, theft identity is a hard crime to prosecute. once your name is in the nations computer systems, a red flag is waved when a check is attempted to be cashed or a credit card is used. your question is really incomplete. your police report is your insurance policy. its public record that your identification was stolen and is being used illegaly, by someone else without permission. the max. liability on a reported stolen credit card, is $50.00. if only your drivers license was stolen and used, your police report should cover the bogus purchases made by an unknown theft suspect.

It depends on which state this occurred in. In Florida, merchants are not liable for failure to properly check ID and facilitating a criminal in fraudulently using someone else's information. Until there is, fraud and ID theft will remain rampant. I did hear that New Jersey has a law the holds such merchants liable.
