Speak to him or her properly. That's really the best thing you can do for the kid, always make sure that you are talking to the child as if they were a little adult; adjust your vocabulary to their level, obviously, but speak in clear, complete sentences, and don't "baby-talk" or let them watch TV programs that do a lot of baby talking (i.e. Teletubbies) so that they are immersed in proper speaking techniques. You'd be surprised how quickly a young child will pick up on the way you talk. Also if the child is older (closer to 3), then start talking about the alphabet; sing songs and show him or her letters, telling the child what the letters are and what they sound like ("I" is for ice cream, for example). That way they learn to associate proper letter sounds and are learning what the letters look like to boot. Good luck! :)

Talk to them, listen when they respond. My son loves to say "yeah", and I'll just follow up with "yes" Ask them if they can say _____. and then prise them when they attenp to, but repeat the word pronounced correctly. (They will probably not get it out right.
