A few are...maybe. Some people think since we have a society and live in boxes, that we are civilized. Yet we still have legal murder (war, executions) and we still kill one another because our version of god does not agree with their version of god. There is a real need for Amber alerts. Business has decided it is a good thing to pay off the relatives of the dead because it is cheaper to do that than make a safe airplane. Drugs that can kill you are legal (listen to or read the fine print) yet a drug that is beneficial (pot) is not. We can't leave our children alone with authority figures and a nurse has to be in the doctor's office with you. I could go on. What is civilized about all this? Just for fun, read, if you haven't already, Daniel Quinn's book 'Ishmael'.

Psychology says that no one knows the contents of his subconscious mind. Many unpredicted savage behaviours originate there. The subconscious mind works dominantly in darkness. The Hindu Puranas call the present age as age of darkness - Kali Yuga. The evil that we observe in the present age of the world is attributed to its affect. Ancient Europeans wrote about Ages of Man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_Man There are also many other references to various types of world ages or Ages of Man in Hopi (worlds), Mayan (suns) and other cultures of antiquity. Giorgio de Santillana, the former professsor of the history of science, mentions approximately thirty ancient cultures that believed in the concept of a series of ages and the rise and fall of history, with alternating Dark and Golden Ages. More details of these Ages are available in the Yuga concept of the Hindus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satya_Yuga http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/iml/iml11.htm http://www.crystallotus.com/Lemuria/04bbTheAges.htm http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/AgesOfWorld.html

First define "civilized". It comes from Latin civis=city, and is used as a put-down by city people to say how much better they are than the country bumpkins. Since round about know we are passing the point where half the human population lives in what can reasonably be described as cities (habitations of more than 100,000, I think), then in a literal sense, yes we are civilized. Other than that, you would have to define the term better. Aztecs probably thought the height of civilisation was lots of human sacrifices. To parody, Americans think civilization is big cars, air conditioning, and lots of ice in the drinks. Osama bin Laden thinks civilization is every body being strict Muslims. Give us yur definition and we can discuss it.
-
Technically speaking, yes. But if there's one thing the global spread of civilization has served to prove, it's that "Civilized" isn't necessarily synonymous with "Good".
-
We live in cities (civitas) so, yes, we are civilised, but if civilised means refined and well-behaved, no. That is a horse of a different colour.
-
No we (humans) are not. The more time I spend around my chickens the more I realize that humans aren't nearly as advanced as they would like to think.

Read the newspapers, watch the tv news and listen to the radio, your conclusion will I am sure be th same as mine: A resounding NO!
-
As long as the lights are on and our bellies full.

Laws, rules, and guidelines help to prevent crime and wrongdoing. Of course society as a whole is not perfect and probably never will be as long as humans are in control. Please provide me with a short definition that clearly shows what you mean by civilized and I may be able to supply you with a more helpful answer directly related to your intentions.

In general, far more so than people realize. And, we are still evolving. There will always be some types that are incapable of contributing to a civilized world. Nothing can be done about that. That's the way it's been since time out of mind.

Gandhi was asked in the 19303: "What do you think about civilization in Britain?" His answer supposedly was : "I think it would be a good idea." Still true today, I think. (Not only for Britain, but for the whole world, of course.)

Only when we want to be.

Some of us recognize civility, principles and the reasons for being that way. Some people respect order and organization and their usefulness. Some people try to exercise self-control and respect for others. That is what being civilized is.
-
Judging by what I see in the news and the content of TV programmes, films etc. No!
-
No - Just look around at all the violence, ethnic cleansing and suffering in the world. The wealth of one person and the poverty of another next door shows that we do not have a lot of compassion for others. We also seem to have very little respect for our natural resources. We have a long way to go before we can call humans civilized.

When people think of civilization, they think of humanitarian decency when the word actually applies to and depicts technological and social advancements which better the lives of everyone in the name of convenience. That doesn't mean we have anymore common sense or respect for those around us anymore then cannibals might. Civilization and its eventual construction often demand cruel sacrifice and unjust compromising, so I don't get how everyone thinks that to be civilized should define a higher sense of class, purpose or importance in the name of regard for human life and decency, when it just shows how many people we slaughtered, pillaged or messed with. The two concepts are often mixed together, but they don't really match because they both mean something else entirely. Human decency doesn't do anything for evolution, for example. But, somehow along the way, we reasoned that power makes a person stronger and better, which might explain the pompous foundation of civilization. A word became something else, but look at it literally, and it's completely different. Allow me to quote Conan the Barbarian-They call my people uncivilized, but at least we do not sell our children.
