They traditionally wait a few years then look for another reincarnation of the Buddha.There is very specific tests used to find the next incarnation in line,such as objects that were used by the Dali Llama.

Though this already sounds ludicrous I know in fact the truth is even more rediculous: There will be two people claiming the title. The chinese have passed a law saying that the Dalai Llama is only permitted to reincarnate into a body that is acceptable to the communist party (no joke look it up!) so the chinese government will declare one poor little kid with good communist parents to be the new Dalai Llama and his Tibetan Buddhist sect will do their mumbo jumbo religious gittery to pick out some other little tyke to be their new Dalai Llama. Thus will emerge a new faith of "official communist approved Tibetan buddhism" with its parallel dalai llama in a similar fashion to the way there is an "official communist approved catholic church" along side the real underground one in China.
