It starts hanging around with the water pump smoking marijuana.

Your voltmeter on your dashboard will peg out, if you do not have one your first indicator will be a near dead battery. If you hope it goes away very soon your car will not start.

On my vehicle when the alternator starts going bad, the check engine light comes on. I ignored this for a day or so and then the batt went dead.

well this morning i was on the bus on my way to school and the electronic guage showed that the battery was almost dead and the amp guage was showing that it was in the negative charge. So the battery was not getting charged, so then that is how you know that the alternator is going bad.

1. Indicator/dummy light 2. Voltmeter shows less than 12(more or less) volts 3. Lights dimming at night (Think about it you may not notice during the day but at night when you use all the electricity for the lights you'll notice 4. Dead battery (the battery may be fine but if the alternator isn't working it will run out of electricity because it's not being replentished. Any parts store or garage can test the battery and alternator. Parts stores will check them for free

A good battery recharge failure can also be caused by a loose or worn alternator belt even when you have a good alternator. Getting the belt tightened or replaced is cheaper than replacing the alternator so have the belt checked before you consider replacing the 'nator.

My alternator went out about a year ago. 1. About 4 lights came on my dash (battery, brake lights, alternator, check engine). My car worked fine for about a week. 2. Having trouble getting the car started. 3. Lights dimming, no air/heat, and electrical. 4. Power steering no longer worked. Turns out you can run a car off of a bad alternator for a while; the car will run off of the battery power left so that's why my car worked ok (or slightly ok) for about a week. You can take your car to a mechanic/auto parts store where they can check the imput/output of your alternator to see if it is registering anything. Also, many mechanics will install a rebuilt alternator for you if you request so you don't have to pay as much as a brand new one and these often work just as well. Good luck!
