  • I used my rice cooker for about a year as a humidifier (since I couldn't afford a proper one at the time). I filled it half full of water and ran it, it was good because it turns itself off when the water is gone. It boils the water, but it takes a good while to get to boiling since the heating element is small. The only problem was that since this was an uncoated aluminum pan, it was left pitted and with mineral buildup from the boiling. Though it still worked, I replaced it with a nonstick rice cooker when I had the money.
  • I once cook pulses in the rice cooker so I see no reason why you cannot use it to boil water. If the water evaporates it will cut off so I don't think there will be any disastrous side effects.
