  • i say hello, and their name. that way you've acknowledged that you know who's on the line but saved them the time of introducing themselves. what i dislike is when people call, or leave an e-mail, saying "it's me"-or even "it's mary". unless you know them pretty well how many mary, bob, etc.s do you know whose voice you recognize?
  • I go right into talking with a "Hey hows it going?"
  • I just say hello otherwise. It could be any member of my friend's family calling from that line.
  • first i say hello then talk about the caller
  • I jokingly answer the phone with a childish grumpy voice (if I'm in my usual cheerful mood) stating: "WHAT do you want?!"
  • I was raised to say 'hello' on the phone. I had a niece that would call, when my brother was visiting, and the first words out of her mouth were 'Let me talk to my dad.' I had enough one day and said "Hello, I'm informing whomever is on this line that it is extremely rude not to greet whomever is speaking on the other end. I feel if you wish something, you can at least acknowledge that someone is taking the time to answer the phone. Until you learn to say hello, I refuse to speak to you." And I hung up the phone. Three times later I answered to a patient "Hello. How are you? May I speak with my father, if he is there, please?" After that, she ALWAYS said hello, even if nothing else was said between us.
  • Hello *inserts name*, how's it going?
