  • Rum is distilled from sugar cane (molasses) widely available in the Carribean and South America. Pirates (at least from America's perspective) were very active off the coast of SA and in the Carribean.
  • Caribbean captains took advantage of a cheaper and more readily available source of liquid sold by local sugar cane plantations called "kil devil" a foul tasting by-product of sugar cane processing which later became known as rum. In fiction, Robert Louis Stevenson gave rum to history thanks to Captain Billy Bones in the book, Treasure Island, the alcoholic beverage most associated with pirates is rum. Alcohol was used to extend the life of the water. A dram (a small amount) of alcohol, normally rum, was often added to the water to kill the algae and make it taste better.
