Because American Idol has very little to do with talent. It's theme is in its name. An idol is an illusion, a package deal. There are so many extremely talented people out there who'd never make it past the 1st audition on Idol because of age or appearance. American Idol is the McDonald's of talent showcases.

I don't know much about the rules of the show but if there is a rule that you must be of ATLEAST a certain age, I would agree with that...kids should be in school as there will be plenty of time when they're a little older to realize their dreams. If we've learned anything about putting your child in show business too young, take a look at Lindsay Lohan or any other in her age group... I think why they have only certain age group is so that the scales are, in a way, balanced. I think people might have a tendency to vote for an adorable little kid over a 50 year old, no matter how much more "talent" the latter may have. Plus, the show is all about marketing the winner...the demographic of people who buy the albums and watch the videos is such that they want those who they can relate to...
