How can I kill off the weeds that are growing around my apple tree without hurting the tree?

    You can use something like Roundup. Shield the trunk of the tree from the spray with a sheet of plastic. These types of herbicides are absorbed through the leaves and kill the root of the plant, but are not active in the soil.

    I would put down thick black plastic over the area, weighted down by rocks. If no sunlight reaches the weeds, they cannot feed and will die. Then the plastic can be removed.

    I wouldn't use any chemicals. I would simply use a mulching mat or mulch. A real deep mulch will supply some nutrients as they break down. No need for any chemicals. Keep it natural.
