Oh my gosh, yes. And funny to think that I was so entranced by the smell that I never noticed if anyone else was doing it. I'm sure we all were... and what a funny image of a classroom of kids all sniffing their dittos. :)

When i taught high school I used it because I could not get access to the copier. (this is in 1995) The kids had never seen a purple memeograph paper. I had to teach them to smell it.

They called them "back in the day" copies.

Oh, man! Yes! Does that ever bring back memories. And the best thing was to be the one the teacher picked to hand out a stack of newly ditto-ed papers. Nice and chilly and smelling cool.

The mimeeograph with the purple ink! Yeah! Man, first grade spelling tests were always in purple! By third grade, most things were in black, but some were still purple.

By the time I went to a new school and was in sixth grade, it was definitely a black copy.

I always loved getting papers printed in purple ink!

    redcatt63 is around here somewhere......

Is that the same as mimeograph (sp?)? The thing they turned with a crank? I used to love it when the teachers handed out worksheets that were just printed....I loved the smell!

I was hoping the "high" it gave me would lead to better results on the test.

Hey, Idne, how are you? I remember that cool smell vividly! Were those copies the ones where you grabbed the handle and rolled the cylinder while it spit out copies? I don't remember if that was them or not. I just remember ruining about 3 shirts (with the ink) and my parents saying "DO NOT help the teacher anymore"! LoL!

Yes I remember dittos. The type was purple and the more the teacher printed it the fuzzier the type/image. And yes the smell of fresh dittos! How do we explain this to our adult children. Or are we lucky we could have children after smelling them?

Yes and Yes! I'm not sure when they stopped using these machines. I was in 1st grade in 1978 and I thought I remember having these delicious copies right on through elementary school. Awesome post.

Absolutely! I remember it was best when they were still a little wet. The teacher would pass out the dittos and everyone would press the page to their noses. It has lead to a lifetime of my sniffing freshly printed materials of any kind... especially money. Glad to know other people share this great childhood memory with me!
