  • sometimes I just can't help myself some questions deserve a silly answer
  • 1) silly: "1. foolish, showing a lack of good sense and wisdom. I made a very silly mistake. 2. irresponsible, showing irresponsible behaviors. What a silly kid, he's always getting in trouble. 3. playful, giggly. The newlyweds called each other silly little nicknames. 4. half-conscious. The impact of the ball knocked him silly. 5. (cricket) of a fielding position, very close to the batsman; closer than short 6. (pejorative) simple, not intelligent, refined. John was prosperous and his helpless, silly father could be of no use to him." Source: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/silly The answer will depend on the sense of "silly" that you are using. We can exclude here meanings 4 and 5, I think. 2) - meaning 1 (lack of good sense and wisdom): I would point at the mistake (with diplomacy, if possible). In some extreme cases, flag it as nonsense. No humorous answer here. - meaning 2 (showing irresponsible behaviors) I would point at the behavior (with diplomacy, if possible). In some extreme cases, flag it as offensive. No humorous answer here. - meaning 3 (playful, giggly) Here would be an humorous answer perfectly appropriate - meaning 6 (simple, not intelligent) Maybe the best would be to ignore it. No humorous answer here either. 3) If a question is absolutely nonsensical it is appropriate to flag it as nonsense. If a question is just humorous, almost any answer will be appropriate, I think. Possibly some people will find it not so appropriate if you give a serious answer in this case, but why not? Maybe that silly question gives you the idea of a deep philosophical thought! If you find that the question should not be asked, you can tell it too, but this could eventually not be appreciated. If you find a question lacks good sense or is unintelligent, but get the impression that the askers are taking their question seriously, an humorous answer would be absolutely not appropriate.
  • If by "silly" you also mean "whimsical", then I think a whimsical answer would be appropriate. If by silly you mean illogical or nonsense, then I think it should be ignored. :)
