    How old is the scanner? The company may not have released drivers that are compatible with Vista. Do a Google search on the particular model of scanner you own. If there are drivers for Vista, plug the scanner in, power it on, and download them. Install them, and you should be golden. However, a lot of older hardware is incompatible with Vista, so you may be out of luck.
