  • There are two ways to claim dependents, qualifying child or qualifying relative. Your son, since he was 23 and NOT a full time student, does not meet the qualifying child test. The exception is if he were disabled, and you provided more than half his support. Otherwise, you can see if your son meets the qualifying relative test. Since you said your son lived with you all year, and didn't have income, and I assume you provided more than 50% of his support, you can claim him as a dependent.
