Do you think we should learn to sign(language) or just let deaf and mute people learn to adjust to us?

Given the amazingly small population of deaf people, I think it's ridiculous to suggest that everyone else should learn to understand sign language.

I think it would be a good idea for everyone to learn at least some basic universal signs. Not only in case you have to speak with someone who is deaf, but in any case where you might have to get something across and can't speak to the person (someone in another car, if you are at some sort of performance where talking would be intrusive, etc). And if it were universal (I don't know if sign language is), it would help when having to ask something of someone who speaks a different language.

why would you want to let them learn to adjust you guys? we have to learn how to talk and all that work, why don't some hearing people do some learning too? :o)
