Why is it almost a taboo for (especially) young people to imagine their parents having a sex life?

Because it means they are no different from you and what child wants to think he/she is just like his/her parents? :)

I think that we have such an innate desire to not think of our parents in a sexual manner that we find it easier to just pretend that they only had sex to conceive us and then gave it up forever. Maybe we would like to think they are so focused on us that they never needed sex anymore. Also, as Rosie said, no one wants to be like their parents. God what a horrible thought to wonder if your parents were better in bed than you are.

I dont think it is taboo, I just think it is something we dont want to think about. Our parents are generally such an influential part of our lives and we see them as perfect and in control beings. The idea of them getting naughty is just not part of that mental image, so we go "ewwwww" when we think about it. Obviously our parents have sex lives, how else did we get here --- and as you get older that 'taboo' fades.
