Why were certain people chosen for the Mayan human sacrifices?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking- are you saying why didn't everyone just jump aboard the sacrifice express- or are you asking about the way they would pick the people who were to be sacrificed? i'm not sure which people group it was that did this so correct me if I'm wrong- but I think Mayans would choose the most beautiful virgins from among them and then take a man and Woman selected from among that group that were the most beautiful of all and- well- take them to a high place or something like that and then kill them. Why all the people didn't join in is probably because it woud be bye bye Mayan culture if everyone decided to sacrfice themselves...

There are three leading theory's to answer this - the first is that the names of all eligible people were placed into a pot, and the needed number selected at random. second - many people saw dying for their gods to be the greatest honour and would volunteer. the third theory is that certain people were taken at birth and raised in captivity to be "pure" and then sacrificed when needed

The Maya didn't hunt down farmers like Mel Gibson tries to get people to believe in Apocalypto. They were captive warriors. I think it was the Inca in their practice of human sacrifice that picked beautiful virgin boys and girls to leave on the mountaintops to die. The Maya chose captive warriors.
