Use of work internet is highly watched. Can I download internet information on a separate removable drive on my employers computer without it being detected?

They're probably watching the traffic going across the network, not the files on your computer. So it wouldn't help. The only way around it would be to use a tunneler like this one which will encrypt all of your Internet traffic and keep the history separate (which I personally have never used and don't endorse it's just one I know of): http://www.metropipe.net/

I think they can always keep track of what your doing even if you take the drive with you. They can probably look at it or copy it will you are downloading.
