  • I wouldn't hold my breath. The Nano meets Indian Safety and Emissions standards. It is also listed as meeting European emission standards. If you look at the Tata Motors web site you will see some of the other vehicles they sell in India do not have air bag systems. I can assume then that the $2500 vehicle would also lack them. This would mean that the Nano would not meet US safety regulations.
  • Likely not ever, at least not without SERIOUS redesign. It has NO rear seat belts. It accelerates too slowly It's top speed is less than the posted speed limit on certain US highways It's operational range (Fuel capcity * MPG) is too short Americans are too big/heavy. Bear in mind that some automakers redesigned their US-market models with wider seats to account for our nation's greater heft. Look at our obesity rate!
  • It is definitely a promising alternative for local travel. It may be restricted from Highway access if it doesn't meet the posted speed limits, but as long as it achieves the minimum speed limit, it cannot be banned from the highways. I would get one for running around town, getting to work, etc. Just needs to be tweaked for meeting Safety requirements for US. Hopefully it's done before it hits the US or else the US will jack the price up by $10-15,000 to bring it up to 'par' with its standards. I believe the cheapest new car in the US is around $14,000 for a Scion A... which isn't American Made either. Sometimes I feel like "American Made" means "Costs more than the foreign equivelant"... which it should be cheaper if it's not imported... right?
  • At $2,000 the Nano will never be offered in the U.S. $2,000 will not even cover labor and Union dues
  • The Nissan Versa and the Hyundai Accent are both under $10000
