I've been trying to follow the US presidential elections, but I'm not sure I get it. How long is it going to take to elect a president? Does each state vote seperately on consecutive days until all 50 have voted?

What is going on now in the USA is not the election itself, but the primaries, where the registered voters of the main parties select who they would like to be their party's candidate in the actual election. The parties later each hold a national convention, where the candidates still in the race after the primaries try to convince the delegates to elect them to be the final candidate for the presidential election, which is held every four years in November. The primaries are a sort of barometer of what the rank and file members of the parties want in a presidential candidate.

I am not intrested in politics. I can't understand them. I bairley know who the president is right now. (I don't know this because the new people. Did they change him already?) So theres not much to learn. Or is too hard to understand.

The idea was to keep members from one party voting losers for the other party's candidate. Keep in mind that the US is a federal system where the popular vote doesn't necessary rule as it would in "unitary" countries.
