My dad had a problem like that with a car he'd just bought and was driving home. It turned out that the tires had just been changed, and someone had neglected to tighten the nuts on one of the tires, and they were gradually coming off! Fortunately, he stopped before the wheel came off. Don't drive on a car that's shaking like that!

It could be any number of things: 1) Loose lug nuts (first thing you check - they should be tightened to a minimum of 90ft./lbs) 2) Out of balance wheels (This requires a balancing machine which means you must take it to a shop.) 3) Improper inflation on one or more tires. These do not usually cause vibration but it is a possibility. 4) Brake discs. If the discs are warped or otherwise have an uneven surface, the brake pad hitting the disc will cause vibration. This can usually be fixed by machining the discs, but sometimes it requires replacement of the rotors. 5) Front axle components. There's lots of components there (too many for me to want to list them) that, if loose, could cause vibration. However, this is rarely the case. Hope this helps, Good luck
