The term hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus—internal—or under the skin around the anus—external. Just because one is outside the anus doesn't necessarily mean it is an external hemorrhoid. There are also prolapsed hemorrhoids- which is when the vein swells so much that it protrudes outside of the body. When they get to this point you might need medical attention to reduce, remove, or push them back in. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/hemorrhoids.html
