  • Animals tend to know when the end is near. I may be wrong, but you should probably prepare yourself.
  • Has your vet done an ultrasound of your dogs liver? If not and you can afford this test I would suggest it :)
  • I'm so sorry you should see if hes in pain. I'm sorry it might be his time :(
  • Before you make any final decisions, get a second opinion. I say this because the diagnosis lyme disease was actually a baseball sized tumor in our 15 year old ACD. The vet was puzzled and she was honest with us about it and we got the second opinion. We had to say goodbye to her, but we didn't have to feel bad about second guessing something so important.
  • I fully agree with Andersen777. If you have the financial resources...DO seek a second opinion. You might look into contacting the most local Vet SCHOOL (University) for your area. While normally it is possible for this small breed to live to be 12 to 15 years of age, this may be the time you need to think ONLY of putting your dog first here. It's always hard when money is the primary problem in caring for anyone, human or animal...none of us should have to base our choices on such a horrible decision-maker. But, it is an unfortunate fact that if you cannot afford to go "all out" with the costs of extreme treatments and research, you still have an obligation to the well-being of your beloved friend. If you cannot afford to go forward quickly to seek a possible cure...there is NO SHAME in accepting that you simply can't do it. Your dog KNOWS that you have loved it. He, she knows and has valued all of the kindness, the play, the food and the simple, quiet times you've sat petting it...THESE are the things that have mattered most to your dog. Animals do not fear death as some of us do. They fear PAIN, CONFUSION, FEAR and an inability to function as they normally would...because they don't understand why they cannot. They don't worry about what is to come..they fear what is happening in the NOW, when everything they have known is suddenly wrong. Please do not procrastinate with this...don't let your dog suffer and waste away...that is not kindness. I know personally how hard it is...many here personally understand exactly how horrible you are feeling and I have no doubt at all that a few will read your question and will probably shed a few tears at the thought of your loss. All of us here, who have had and loved our companion animals...be they dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, horses, or lizards or even a gold fish...have suffered the loss of those loving friends. You can't honestly let the current situation continue. You have to make the hard choice...if there is no other way to go. Let us know, either way...and please know many, many here will be thinking of you and your dog.
