He also won a bronze medal in the 1948 Games and he was also was a decathlete in 1956. He was only the second man to pole vault 15 feet, this was before the fiberglass pole. In decathlon competition Richards has made marks as follows: 100 meters, 10.9; 400 meters, 51.8; 1500 meters, 4:56; 110 meters hurdles, 15.3; high jump, 6 ft.; broad jump, 22 ft. 6 in.; pole vault, 14 ft. 9 in.; shot put, 42 ft. 3 in.; discus, 136 ft.; javelin, 185 ft.
