  • I haven't had much luck with wmp for avi - i use VLC instead: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
  • You're probably missing a codec needed to play the file. All .avi files are not created equal. And all .avi files are not playable in WMP 11. I do recommend you download and try the free VLC media player. It plays many more video and audio formats because it has most of the common codecs built in.
  • I never had that problem because I use Media Player Classic ( http://tinyurl.com/dltj9h ). Others here recommend VLC. I won't say they are wrong, but I will say that I tried VLC and got totally disgusted with it and the problems I had with it in under ten minutes, resulting in an uninstall with extreme prejudice. Maybe you'll have better luck with VLC than I did.
