Possibly A Trip To Mars, written by Jules Verne, sci-fi writer extraordinaire. It's a famous film whereby a group of people shot via a cannon onto the moon. Yeah it sounds silly now, but consider it was made in 1902 (before it was even figured out how to project speech in films) and the special effects showing the projectile on the moon were incredible. Also called Le Voyage dans la lune, as it is French.

Definately the silent picture called "Metropolis" It was a movie years ahead of it's time and shown what society could be like 100 years into the future. It was a landmark film made in the early 19'th century.It had humaniod robots that must have been scary at that time.
