Because they heard other people say it and copy them. I personally don't say that, but that's just me. It's a question I want the answer to, too. Where, oh where did it originate?
-
back in the times of the black plauge, people who sneezed may have been suffering from the plaugue, so it was actually illegal to NOT say it back in those times in England. It originated from there.
-
Well apparently when you sneeze its your soul trying to escape so we say bless you to keep it in (that is according to millhouse from the simpsons)
-
I thought it was just 'bless you'.
-
I thought it was because your heart stops beating or skips a beat when you sneeze..
-
It's just one of those things everyone does - maybe from an old wives tale, but just something that is considerate to do.
-
i heard that when you sneeze all your demons are released if someone says 'god bless you' it keeps the demons from re-entering.
-
It can be both, "God Bless you" or "Bless you". I don't recall my source of information, but I had heard that it had something to do with demons or evil spirits being removed from your body, so when a person says "God bless you" it prevents the demons of re-entering your body, or something like that anyway. I have never heard about your soul trying to get out, but who knows...lol.

I have heard a few things (I dont for a minute believe the escaped soul junk) but I heard that your heart skips a beat or your breath becomes irregular or a sneeze may indicate an onset of some type of illness so the "Bless You" is simply that, a blessing! Mainly tho, I think it is just common courtesy to say "Bless You" when someone sneezes...kinda falls in line w/please, thank-you, excuse me...those sort of things!!!
-
They have nothing better to say, I suppose
-
I thought it had something to do with the plague. But did you know if you see someone building up to do a sneeze and repeat 'Dont Sneeze' 'Dont Sneeze' over and over again...they don't! Its the same as if you are close to someone in mid yawn. Touch their tongue very quickly with the tip of your finger, and they stop dead! Please don't ask me how I know that!
-
I've heard a couple reasons along the lines of what others have said; -Your body is momentarily opened up to demonic posession (you're being blessed so as not to be posessed) -Your heart stops (you're being blessed because your heart restarted)
-
In Denmark we say prosit, which I believe means something along the lines of "may it do you good".. can't recall why
-
I heared that in acient time there was a greek KIng who sneezed and fall Ill and his Illness increased to such a extent that he Died , so thats why people say "God Bless You"!
-
I have also heard that the body and mind are open to demonic possession, and people said "may God bless you" as a way to ward off the demons. I just say "cover your mouth".
-
Because people tend to follow mindless traditions based on practices of old that actually made a little sense or was necessary. In this case it had to do with the plague and the sneeze being a possible onset of the thing. The other story is the idea of the soul leaving the body and the heart stopping. At least back then I could understand it. Nowadays there's absolutely no point in saying it but people do it anyway because everyone else does it because everyone else is doing it LOL! I don't say it at all regardless of who is sneezing.

I think it is ,because you temporaily stop breathing. When you say Gog bless you.You are asking God to give your breath badc.
