No, your normal DVDs will not play on the blue ray. It doesn't necessarily mean the end of HD DVD either. I think both formats will be around for a long time down the road. For example, look at the VHS/BETA. I know thats old but the VHS won out in the private market and the BETA is still going strong in the commercial broadcast industry.

1) This will possibly be the end of the format war. HD-DVD will not immediately disappear, but people who were not sure will probably choose Blue Ray now. It will be the same as it was for the magnetic videotape format war (Betamax vs. VHS). This format wars do not bring anything for the consumers. 2) "Backward compatibility While it is not compulsory for manufacturers; the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs for backward compatibility. For instance, Samsung's first Blu-ray Disc drive can read CDs, regular DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. All other Blu-ray Disc players released are also capable of DVD playback, though not all support CD playback. This includes Sony, Panasonic, Philips, LG, Pioneer and PC-based players from Alienware, and Dell."
