Yes, Brigham Young did teach Adam-God ideas, and seemed to believe this doctrine, but without providing us with a very clear picture of what he did believe about it. His beliefs on this were never deveoped into and approved as church doctrine. This quote summarizes nicely: "Brigham Young believed and taught Adam-God, and what he taught was possibly true, but he didn't see fit to explain all he knew or didn't live long enough to develop the teaching into something that could be reconciled with LDS scripture and presented as official doctrine. In this view, we simply don't know what Brigham Young meant, and modern leaders have warned us about accepting traditional explanations of Adam-God, so we should just leave that belief "on the shelf" until the Lord sees fit to reveal more about it." http://en.fairmormon.org/Adam-God

It would be difficult for the Mormon to prove Young was only theorizing by the simple fact that Young, in this sermon, clearly claims his teachings to be "doctrine." In his conference address on April 9th, Young closed this topic with the following warning, "Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation." A fair question to ask would be, "Since Joseph Fielding Smith and Spencer W. Kimball did not believe what Young had to say on this matter, does that mean Smith and Kimball are damned?" If Young was truly a prophet of God, would this mean all Latter-day Saints who reject the Adam-God teaching are also damned? I guess select what prophets you believe.

He was a prophet. He did teach the Adam-God "theory" as it is today referred to. Fortunately Brigham Young did not have the power to define doctrine for the church, but rather authority to teach and to preach to the church. Official doctrines are not adopted via the assertions of any particular individual. We do not consider prophets to be either omniscient or infallible as some would consider.

Alright, just when I think I can take a break and get back to a normal life, Latter Day Satan makes a return to answer bag with the same offensive questions. The reason it is offensive to me is I know his history of losing debate after debate and going to another part of the forum and starting the exact same time all over again, even knowing that he's lost. For that reason I am going to go around to every question he's asked about Mormonism and I am going to flag each and every one of them as offensive. I think he's done enough hate-mongering to lose the privilege of debating in the Mormon forums, and I can just hope that answerbag sees it my way.

Yes he was a Prophet and yes he did teach that.

Brigham Young was indeed the second Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called Mormons.) Please note however, that while God speaks through a prophet, that when not speaking God's words the man who holds that office can and does speak his own. And those can be and sometimes are wrong. I know of only one case where Brigham Young said such a thing. But he DID say it. Notice that he did not continue to teach it. Apparently he discovered it was not true and simply dropped the idea. Once spoken and written however it is in the record forever, and there are those who, finding it, will crow about false teachings, or worse, adopt it and cling to it as Brigham himself did not.
