  • they're hard as opposed to soft
  • They used to be called floppy disks. They were in a flexible sleeve that you could bend and flip around. But to make the disks faster, with more bits recorded on the surface, they made the disks rigid and strong, inside a vacuum-sealed hard case. They didn't bend anymore, thus "hard" disks, or hard drives. The next big thing is Solid State Drives (SSD's). They are solid circuitry, with no disk or moving parts at all. No mechanical movement means no wear and tear, so they are ten times faster than hard drives and last much longer too!
  • something with that capacity has to be hard, otherwise the soft part wouldn't enjoy being driven by it.
