Why in the States is petrol referred too as a gas although when entering your vehicle it is a liquid

I am not sure but gas is short for gasoline. Perhaps gasoline is the name for the liquid form? I don't really know.

Gasoline is the finished product, I think. Petroleum makes gas, right? (I think)
