Hehe, as a French teacher of English, I've often asked myself if the 'and' was to be said or not. Given the variety of your answers above, I wonder if the correct answer is not that we do pronouce the 'and' except when referring to the year itself, where it's common usage to omit it. We should therefore say: 'two thousand and eight potatoes' but 'in the year two thousand eight'. However, I'd appreciate an English native to confirm this.
-
I'm English and I pronounce it two thousand and eight. I believe that Americans omit the 'and', perhaps because of a Spanish influence on certain structures in American English.
-
Here in the UK - two thousand and eight. Although for some reason they keep referring to the forthcoming Olympics in London as Twenty Twelve so I guess times are achanging....
-
I just say Two thousand eight. I don't even pronounce the D in thousand haha.
-
It's Twenty-Oh-Eight. Just like 1908 is "Nineteen-Oh-Eight". Nobody says "one thousand, nine hundred and eight", now do they? For years 2010 and beyond, the switch to "twenty" is expected, which will restore the way years have been pronounced for centuries.
-
Two thousand eight. I noticed how we say "two thousand *insert number here*" and 9 years ago, we said "nineteen ninety nine". It's just that "one thousand ninety nine" takes longer to say, and maybe "twenty oh eight" takes longer? Idk
-
two thousand eight
-
Two thousand eight
-
either "two thousan' an' eight" or "oh eight"
-
I say two thousand and eight.
-
Too towzin-ate; at least that's what it sounds like when I pronounce it, but yeah, two thousand eight. >_>
-
You go "two thousand and eight" and I go "twenty oh and eight."
-
two thousand eight
-
Two thousand and eight.
-
Two double-o eight
-
if you said two thousand AND eight it would come out like this 2000 8
-
Two thousand eight. My 2 cents.
-
I say, Two Thousand Eight. But, I've heard people say Two Oh Eight.
-
two thousand eight. lol.
-
two thousand eight, no and
-
Two thousand and eight. I would do it the other way, but there's been an odd shift in the pronunciation of years since 2001. I think it may be down to things like the pronunciation of 2001: A Space Odyssey. In any case, I want to go back ASAP, and 2010 seems like the best year to do so.
-
I'm always saying "Two Thousand Eight."
-
"20 O 8" (twenty OH Eight) You are permitted to say the O as a number being that it not only represents a numerical value less than 1 but look closer to the fat O at the end of Z E R O. visit twentyzeros.com and all climb aboard! randy frushour
-
Twenty Oh Eight - You are permitted to say 20 O 8 instead of two-thousand and eight because not only does the O have an numerical value of less than one but - TOO - observe the big fat O at the end of Z E R O! So let's here poll. Is O (letter o) and 0 (zerO) for this forum or subject synonymous? I believe so! all climb aboard twentyzeros.com
-
Two thousand and eight - its a number after all!
-
i just say two thousand and eight...
-
two thousand eight (only the decimal says 'and') q:)
-
"Two thousand eight" without "and"
-
two thousand and eight
-
Putting the "and" in there indicates a decimal point, so the way you have it written it would be 2000.8 I usually read 2008 as "two thousand eight," or "two zero zero eight."
-
Two-thousand eight, because if we were to say "Two thousand and eight", the eight, by numerical standards, would indicate there being a decimal point, therefore we would really be referring to the number 2000.8 .
-
i say two thousand eight,2008 not two thousand and eight,2000.8
-
"Two thousand and eight" is how I pronounce it.
